Sedentarity and lack of physical activity affect 95% of adults

10,000 steps and more. The observation is edifying: 95% of the population is exposed to a risk of deterioration of health due to lack of physical activity and / or too long past sitting. In other words, only 5% of adults have sufficient physical activity to be protective. This is one of the conclusions of an expertise of the National Sanitary Safety Agency (ANSES) on the lack of physical activity and sedentarity among adults, made public Tuesday, February 15th.

These figures are derived from the scientific literature and data from the Individual and National Study on Food Consumption (INCA3) collected in 2014-2015, with 1 305 adults aged 18 to 64 in France, there are So many years. But the observation has not changed. “Unfortunately, the situation has aggravated,” says Professor Irene Margaritis, Head of the Nutrition Risk Assessment Unit at ANSES, who coordinated the report.

To measure physical activity, studies focus on cardiorespiratory activity (running, cycling, walking to good pace …), muscle work (fitness, tennis, swimming …) and relaxation (yoga, gymnastic…). “Women are more exposed to the lack of physical activity, 70% of them being below all levels of activity identified to be healthy”, Pointe Annes.

Risk of premature mortality

Lack of activity is currently considered the fourth risk factor for premature mortality, according to the World Health Organization, which estimates that 3.2 million deaths are attributable to the inactivity every year around the world. . Insufficient activity is a risk factor for many chronic diseases: cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, certain cancers, etc.

As for the sedentarity (time passed in front of a screen, sitting at his place of work, in transport …), it reaches on average seven hours a day, according to this work. More worrying, this time exceeds eight hours a day for 38% of adults, under 45 and low-level adults being the most affected. In issue, screen time.

But, “The literature shows that from eight o’clock risks increase by 12% for general mortality, 22% for the risk of cardiovascular death, 25% for depression”, Irene Point Margaritis. Another data: one sixth of the population presents a risk of cardiovascular mortality 45% higher only because it looks too much on television, still alerts handles. Contested, these observations on screen time are aggravated by the sanitary crisis and its successive confines.
