Space data will be used to curb illegal cutting of forests

Deputy Chairman of the Government Victoria Abramchenko and Yuri Borisov held an exit meeting on the use of remote sensing of the Earth during a working visit to Terratech (Holding “Russian Space Systems” State Corporation “Roscosmos”).

Victoria Abramchenko, Yuri Borisov and the Director-General of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, demonstrated software and hardware systems for receiving information from the remote sensing satellites of the Earth, the “Lab of Artificial Intelligence” of Terratech, which contains thematic processing and analysis of data from satellite images with parallel learning Neuralette for processing this data within the Digital Earth project.

Plots of the working meeting discussed the current state and prospects for the development of the Russian orbital grouping of remote sensing of the Earth, as well as the satellite data and services market. According to Vita Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko, many technological solutions are necessary to improve the efficiency of work in the forest complex.

Today, today, the need for forestry by current data of the Russian space survey is provided at 50%. For the forest complex, it is important to improve the possibilities and application of remote sensing data of the Earth. This will allow to introduce modern technologies for forest resource assessment, increase speed, volumes and quality Foresting, state inventory of forests, monitoring fires, cutting and reproduction of forests, “said Victoria Abramchenko.

In addition, as the Deputy Prime Minister said, it is planned to integrate the LESEGIS in pilot mode, which ensures the traceability of wood, and digital earth data of Roscosmos to identify changes in the state of forests.

“Space snapshots should form an evidence base of illegal cutting without check out the inspector in place. Then the controllers will be able to apply effective measures to respond to the illegal logging of the forest even in remote territories,” Abramchenko said.

She noted that this will increase the speed and accuracy of obtaining information on the cutting of forests, including based on the analysis of cosmic filming materials using neural network technology. The pilot project of application of such data will be launched by Rosleshoz together with Roscosmos in 2022 in 2 subjects – Irkutsk and Arkhangelsk region.
