“Inventing Anna”, on Netflix: a Russian scrame in high New York company

Julia Garner lends her features to heroin in the second production signed Shonda Rhimes for the American platform after “Bridgeton”.

It is necessary to wait for episode 4 for the vulgarity of what Inventing Anna says. An elegant young woman, whose eyes are protected by a huge pair of luxury glasses, cuts the queue for receiving a New York hotel and, to monopolize the attention of the receptionist, depositing, one to One, 100 dollar banknotes on the counter. Hypnotized, the employee asks a colleague to take over, and devoted himself entirely to Anna Delvey, CLIENTE VIP of the hotel.

This scene is taken over, point by point, from the survey of the New York Magazine, in 2018, to this young Russian, born Anna Sorokin, who was, for a few years, to go for a Rich German heiress in search of investors for fictitious projects, while leaving slates throughout the city.

From his first images, the series created and produced by Shonda Rhimes warns: “Everything in this story is true, except what has been totally invented.” Inventing Anna is mine of Louvoyer, but his scenario glue close – Notwithstanding Some proper names and some places – the story of Jessica Pressler, the journalist at the origin of the investigation. It appears in the series under the features of Anna Chlumsky, and the actress of Veep alone justifies that we go after the ten – long – episodes.

Class contempt

Everything opposes the two women who meet, for the first time, to the parlor of Rikers Island Prison (New York), where Anna is incarcerated. Refer to closet after a badly verified article, Vivian (Anna Chlumsky) sees a chance in the history of the young scrambler a chance to redo a career. While her husband installs the room of their future baby, Vivian drags her big belly between rikers, her office and the Anna lawyer, who agrees to collaborate with the journalist. And patiently unrolls the thread of a black tale in which an anonymous dressed in Prada manages to extricate delusional amounts to powerful who see only fire.

Inventing Anna is a story that sometimes tries to tell another – on class contempt, inequalities between men and women in the face of money and also in the face of justice. But, by desire to want to put the responsibility of the scandal on the high society that has seen in Anna Sorokin than what she wanted to see, Inventing Anna forgets her main character.

It’s partly the fault of Anna Chlumsky: his eyes filled with questions, his hypermobile features and his body slowed by pregnancy allow him to thwart most clichés that stick to the skin of journalist characters Pugnace. But it is also the fault of a scenario which, just like the article it is drawn, strangely bills on the reasons why Anna Sorokin worked to spend compulsively the money she did not have.
