Ecuador: Flood Review in Quito rises to 28 dead and 52 wounded

Torrential rains, the strongest recorded for twenty years, on January 31, hit the Ecuadorian capital for nearly seventeen hours.

The floods that hit Quito on January 31 did at least 28 dead and 52 wounded, according to a final assessment announced Sunday 6 February by the Mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas.

Relief is always looking for a 38-year-old woman who lived in the popular neighborhood of the Comuna, touched by landslide.

“The total number of deceased people is 28, 52 people were injured, including seven hospitalized,” said Gardaras, at a press conference. A previous balance sheet reported 27 dead and 53 wounded.

Monday 31 January, torrential rains, the strongest recorded for twenty years, hit the Ecuadorian capital for nearly seventeen hours, with a record of 75 liters of water fallen by M 2 , against 2 liters per m 2 advertised. The retention basin, with a capacity of 4,500 m 3 , broke after receiving nearly four times the usual flow.

Buildings and vehicles have been damaged, as well as electric poles. Mud, stones, debris and vehicles were carried away 3 km from La Gasca Avenue, where cleaning work continued on Sunday.

The Mayor of Quito, a city of 2.7 million, said that 555 people were affected by the flood.
