Rocket and Space Corporation “Energy” named after S.P. Korolev (part of the state corporation “Roscosmos”) at the request of colleagues from NASA will reduce a few kilometers the average height of the orbit of the International Space Station and in the coming years will constantly maintain the flight station at this height.
“at the request of Americans, to ensure the conditions for conducting their experiments, we will go to another orbit. Now we will not fly in orbit 419 km, and 3 km less – 416 km,” said the head of the Ballistics Department of the RKK “Energy” Rafail Murtazin.
According to him, such an average height of the ISS orbit can be supported by the Russian side up to the decision to flood the station.
The height correction of the ISS orbit is carried out using the engines of the service module “Star” of the Russian segment of the station or the “Progress MS” cargo ships. To date, 314 ISS orbit corrections were completed, including 165 – Progress ships.
