The approximately 10% French skiers had obviously the spatulas that itch them: after a winter without lifts, and despite the uncertainties related to the health situation, they have largely reserved in the stations, which are also preparing for the return of British customers.
The estimated occupancy rate of tourist accommodation is established, on the eve of the four weeks of school holidays, at 82%, or 3.5 points more than on the eve of the holidays of February 2020. A significant portion of these reservations has been taken in recent weeks, when the loostering of the restrictions that will allow a more festive life in station.
“The dynamic has operated these last fifteen days, notes Michaël Ruysschaert, director of the Agence Savoie Mont Blanc, tourist promotion body of the two Savoie. This is the new tour of the tourist world: people take The more time, analyze the context and modify their mode of reservation. “
Several factors play in favor of the mountain this winter: the frustration accumulated since March 2020, the postponement of foreign clientele stays, whose coming was slowed at Christmas, and the difficulties in reaching more distant destinations. After organizational problems in the stations in December 2021 and January, linked to the fifth wave of Covid-19, February should be less chaotic: few are the seasonal do not have contracted the disease in recent weeks.
In the Alps, the premises saved the month of January
Tourist residences and real estate rental agents benefit most of this recovery, at the expense of hotels or holiday villages. The Airdna website, which brings together the airbnb and abritel platform data, reports an increase in reservations by 21% in Haute-Savoie and 2% in Savoie. Only high-end hospitable hotels like Courchevel could have a disappointing season due to the persistent absence of some Asian or American skiers.
The real balance of the February holiday will depend on the snow, which suffered from the sweetness of the temperatures in January, and the weather of the weekends. In January, the sun in the mountains pushed the Lyonian basin skiers to take long weekends, partially offset the discretion of foreign clienteles.
Before these winter holidays, the overall delay in Mont-Blanc Savoie attendance – which represents about two-thirds of the French mountain market – is 10%, a lesser evil. “There were no English, Belgian nor Dutch tour operators, who are our only markets in this six-week tunnel between New Year and February. It’s rather encouraging,” says Ruysschaert.
