New navigation heights

Information Satellite Systems named after academician M.F. Reshetnyova “(ISS, is part of the state corporation” Roscosmos “) will continue to develop the Space complex of the GLONASS system. Two new contracts with the state corporation” Roskosmos “provide for an increase in work for the enterprise in the interests of the GLONASS system.

ISS company, as the head performer on the Space complex of the GLONASS, will have to create another 11 spacecraft “GLONASS-K2”. These promising satellites have increased functionality. In addition, they assign a mission to increase the accuracy of navigation definitions. They will update the orbital grouping system, which includes 24 spacecraft on medium circular orbit.

On the second contract, the company will develop a draft design on the high-sliced space complex of the GLONASS system. It will include six satellites. Due to the high-ridicule complex, it is planned to ensure increased accuracy of navigation in difficult conditions of high latitudes, primarily in the Arctic region.

Thus, it is planned to increase the navigation orbital grouping up to 30 spacecraft. Such an update of the GLONASS system with the addition of a high-nephel segment to the medium-line will significantly improve the quality of navigation services. Currently, there are eight Space devices “GLONASS-K” and four new Satellites “GLONASS-K2”. The “GLONASS-K” devices are launched into orbit since 2011, the first launch of GLONASS-K2 is planned to be implemented in 2022.

Today, GLONASS system signals are used in different areas of activity. They are necessary for monitoring and dispatching air, terrestrial and water transport, synchronization of mobile cellular communication networks and elements of the Russian energy system, to save people in emergency situations. The scope of satellite navigation is constantly expanding, which causes the need not only to maintain, but also further modernize the GLONASS spacecraft.
