SNCF again hampered by COVID-19 epidemic

Train traffic will be reduced to dealing with booking decreases in TGVs and rising contaminations within the staff of the railway public enterprise.

As in the spring and fall 2020, as in September and in the winter of 2021, the SNCF is struck by the sanitary crisis due to CIVID-19. The railway public company announced, on Friday, January 7, to adapt, from Monday, January 10, what, in its particular language, it appoints “its transport plan”. In other words, it will reduce the amount of trains in circulation on its lines. “A 30% decrease in reservations leads us to reduce the supply of TGVs to 90% of the normal and that of intercity 80%, the offer of night trains residing at 100%”, specifies one of its spokesperson.

So much for the long distance. With regard to daily trains, the SNCF indicates that more than 90% of Regional TER trains will circulate, but with strong disparities across regions. These are the latter who make the final decision to adapt the transport plan. According to a statement made from the TER sites of the SNCF, only two regions (Occitania and Center-Val de Loire) do not indicate any hourly changes related to the pandemic. Brittany reports risk, but does not mention lines affected by COVID-19.

All other regions evoke dessert and schedule changes. In the Normandy region, for example, trains connecting Paris are not disturbed, but 30% of intraregional ter is removed. Remains the particular case of Ile-de-France, which represents the majority of travelers transported by SNCF. The Regional Authority requested that the Transilian Transportation Plan be changed.

“Several cases mingle, explain to the SNCF. For TGVs, it is not the lack of personnel due to the pandemic that leads us to review the offer, but the fall Reservations. In regional trains, we anticipate, on the other hand, sick leaves and, in agreement each time with the regions, we prefer to review the schedules rather than risking last-minute deletions. We give ourselves a margin of adaptation To guarantee the robustness of the service. “

” A pragmatic decision “

The SNCF holds the number of its agents affected by SARS-COV-2 and the unions contacted say they do not hold the information. “We are confronted, like the rest of society, to this fifth wave. Neither more nor less”, highlights a spokesman. By taking the French incidence rate from 2.67% to January 6th given by Public Health France, the SNCF should have listed more than 3,400 positive employees these days. And on 15,000 trains routing a day, 400 should, statistically, no longer dispose of driver.
