Ethiopia: political bet of Abiy Ahmed

After months of civil war, the Prime Minister released opposition figures and proposes a dialogue in the context of a “national reconciliation”. An initiative welcomed with skepticism.

The amnesty granted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, at thirty-seven opposition figures surprised many Ethiopians as they celebrated Genna, Ethiopian Christmas, Friday, January 7th. It is this Christmas spirit that the leader first invoked when granting his thanks to the main political prisoners of the country. These releases, however, creak teeth in an Ethiopia more than ever divided after fourteen months of conflict between the army and the rebels of the Tiger.

The purpose of these releases are, according to the Prime Minister, to participate in an effort of “national reconciliation” in order to put an end to the civil war which started with the bursting of the conflict in the region of the Tiger, in the North From the country, in November 2020. The pivot of this reconciliation – while no ceasefire was signed – would reside in an inclusive national dialogue, and the participation of certain political figures released should provide enhanced legitimacy.

It’s a political shot that the head of government is trying. Now getting rid of the military threat the rebels of the Tygrennes Defense Forces (TDF) on its power – in November 2021, the latter had approached less than 200 kilometers from the capital, Addis Ababa, before being Pissing – Abiy Ahmed strives to redraw the political balance map.

“TRAHISON”

Thirty-seven paid figures belong to three parties at the ends of the Ethiopian political chessboard. The most spectacular release concerns six frameworks of the Popular Tiger Liberation Front (TPLF), Party designated as a terrorist organization by the Federal Parliament, TDF matrix, and the main military actor of the war against the central power.

As a result, the announcement of their release has caused the IRE of officials of the Region Amhara, the second largest region of the country, whose soldiers and militia faces the typerian forces on the background of historical and territorial litigation. The Amhara authorities do not hesitate to qualify the TPLF campaign of “struggle for the survival of the Amhara people”. For some of his leaders, like the President of the Lobby Pro-Amhara Glean, Neamin Zeleke, these releases are a “betrayal”. Until this posting, they were the closest allies of Abiy Ahmed.
