An international group of researchers led by scientists at the University of North Carolina in Chapel-Hill revealed that the triclosan, which is contained in the toothpaste and other products, can cause inflammation of the intestine. The dangers of antibacterial substance reported in the article published in the Nature Communications magazine.
Triklozanan when entering the gastrointestinal tract affects the intestine microflora in such a way that some microbes begin to have a harmful effect, contributing to inflammatory processes. This is due to the fact that bacteria distinguish enzymes, for example, beta-glucuronidases, which, when interacting with the triclosis, become pathogenic for the intestine.
Researchers have developed a compound that blocks a metabolic cycle with the participation of triclosan. Experiments on mice have shown that the inhibitor prevents damage to the large intestine and the development of colitis – the inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. The results will help to find new methods of treating such disorders that are becoming increasingly common among the population.
Previously, the triclosan was used as part of the antibacterial soap, however, in 2016, by order of the FDA, the compound was no longer used as a means of disinfection due to concerns that it contributes to the emergence of sustainable bacteria. However, the triclosan is still added to cosmetics, clothing and toothpastes. However, this substance is easily absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract, and scientists are trying to figure out the mechanisms of its potential influence on the body.
