Instructed in Fedora and Rhel Installer Anaconda transfer to Web interface

Jiri end (Jiri Konecny) from Red Hat announced about work on Upgrades and improving the user interface of the Anaconda used in Fedora, Rhel, CentOS and some others Linux distributions. It is noteworthy that instead of the GTK library, the new interface will be built on the basis of Web technology and will allow remote control via a Web browser. It is noted that the decision on the processing of the installer is already accepted, but the implementation is still at the stage of the working prototype, not ready for the demonstration.

As the basis for creating a new interface, the components of the project CockPit used in Red Hat products to configure and manage servers are involved. CockPit is selected as a well-proven solution with a backend support for interaction with the installer (Anaconda DBUS). In addition, the use of CockPit will make it possible to achieve uniformity and unify the various components of the system management. The application of the web interface will significantly increase the convenience of remote control control, which will not compare with the current solution based on the VNC protocol.

The recycling of the interface will be based on the installer modularity to improve the installer and noticeably affect the Fedora users, since the main part of Anaconda is already converted to modules that interact through the DBUS API, and the new interface will use the ready-made API without internal processing. The deadlines for the start of public testing of a new interface and willingness to promote it in UPStream at this stage of development are not called, but the developers promise to periodically publish reports on the development of the project.
