A fine mist pats the slates of the roof of Felix Faure high school in Beauvais. It’s time for science classes for 29 students in first year of preparatory courses in school teaching (PPPoE), a new industry backed the university’s humanities license-Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV). In the classroom, interactions are numerous. “It changes us not too high school,” describes Julie Bourgault, 18, secondary school education who wanted to be a veterinarian. But after being bitten by a dog, the student said she “totally changed lanes” to move towards the school teaching, a profession to which he felt “natural” look.

In September 2021, 24 preparatory courses in school teaching have been opened in the territory. Backed varied general licenses (letters, humanities, mathematics, Staps, fine arts, social and economic administration), these selective courses include between 30 and 40 students. These alternate courses in high school and college. In high school, students enhance their general knowledge in a variety of subjects: French, mathematics, history, geography, science, arts, English … What prepare the multiple dimensions of their future profession of primary school teacher. In college, they follow the teachings of their license, with an academic approach.

This new training is designed primarily to generate and seal of vocations, in a context of strong decrease in the number of candidates for school teachers recruitment competitions in recent years. In 2009, 41 874 candidates sat across all academies, the eligibility of external competition tests. They were more than 28,378 in 2015, and only 26,657 in 2021. The competition is also less selective, from 16% of eligible candidates in 2009 to 31% in 2021. For the Academy of Amiens this rate increased from 19% to 38% for the same years.

According to a report of the National assessment Council of the school system in 2016, several reasons for this lack of attractiveness of the profession: little recognition, but also concerns about the management of a class, the difficult working conditions, the lack of monitoring of young teachers … the development of these PPPoE aims, in part, to address these challenges.

Strengthening math

In addition, these courses contain PPPoE strengthening mathematics, lacking discipline licensing of letters and humanities whose graduates are many of the school teachers. In 2019, the survey Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) were classified as young French dead last European students in mathematics … the report on mathematics education made in 2018 by Cédric Villani, MP for the Essonne, and Charles Torossian, inspector General of education, recommended to build the training of school teachers from the post-bin around a multidisciplinary course with a sufficient volume devoted to basic disciplines.
