NASA specialists said that the eruption of the Hunga-Tong-Hongha-Haapai volcano in power was comparable to the hundreds of atomic bombs in Hiroshima. This is reported on the Phys.org website.
It turned out that the amount of energy released by the eruption was equivalent to 5-30 megatons of the Tttyl equivalent. For comparison, the power of an atomic bomb dropped to the Japanese city of Hiroshima in August 1945 is estimated at 15 kilotonne.
The explosion of the volcano destroyed the island, located about 65 kilometers to the north of Nukulyf, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, which is the island state of Polynesia. The catastrophe led to the tsunami, the emissions of the ashes, poisoning of drinking water, the destruction of the crop and several villages. Due to the waves that collapsed on the oil tanker at Lima (the capital of Peru), there was a spill of oil, because of which the authorities of Peru declared an ecological disaster. The scale of destruction in the kingdom itself remains unclear due to the disconnection of communications with remote islands.
Previously, the researchers explained that the tsunami, which originated during the eruption of the volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga, was caused by shifts of submarines or shock waves under the underwater explosion.
