Tikhanovskaya issued a statement about referendum in Belarus

The Belarusian opposition politician Svetlana Tihananovsky together with other “democratic forces” issued a statement on a referendum to change the Constitution of Belarus. According to Tikhanovskaya, the head of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has no right to organize such a process. Information transmits a Telegram channel policy.

Tikhanovskaya believes that its non-recognition of the referendum deprives him of political and legal significance. The opposition organizations of the Coordination Council and folk anti-crisis management joined its position. A letter with the text of the statement was sent to the OSCE, the EU, the USA and the United Kingdom, who called on to support the requirements of Tikhanovskaya and condemn the actions of Lukashenko.

Politician proposed alternative political steps to change the situation in Belarus. “The only sustainable way out of the crisis in Belarus is the liberation of political prisoners and conducting new early presidential elections under international observation,” Tikhanov said. In her opinion, European countries and international organizations must once again support these requirements.

Lukashenko proposed the idea to change the country’s constitution against the background of mass protests in the republic in 2020. The draft amendments to the main law was published at the end of 2021, it is actively discussed in Belarusian media. Among the innovations there is a ban on staying one person as president of more than two deadlines. At the same time, Lukashenko himself admitted that he would very soon leave the head of the head of the republic.

Previously, the Belarusian leader appointed a referendum on making changes to the Constitution on February 27, 2022. “Do you take changes and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus?” – Belarusians will have to respond to such a question.
