For the second time in less than three weeks, French nationals have been targeted abroad by Islamist terrorist attacks. The jihadist threat remains high both inside and out of the borders of the hexagon for a country identified, including by Al-Qaida, such as the bastion of the impiety and the largest defender of the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

The last attack dates back to Saturday, January 15, in Tiznit, in the south of Morocco. A man stabbed to death a 79-year-old French in the city market. We do not know the identity of this woman, but we know she resided in a campsite of the region. Was she a retired settled in home in this country, as there are tens of thousands? Or rather a “seasonal migrant”, as there are also many in the campsites of the coast south of Agadir? The most popular beach and closest to Tiznit is that of Aglou, where several dozen motorhomes from Europeans are installed between the months of December and April. Beyond six months, it takes a residence permit to extend its stay in Morocco.

Concerns for the Moroccan economy

According to the information revealed by the Moroccan police, it seems that the same person stabbed without killing her another woman, Belgian this time, the same day in Agadir, 70 kilometers north of Tiznit. Out of danger, the latter was hospitalized in the seaside resort. Arrested the same evening in Agadir, the suspect is a 31-year-old Moroccan.

Very quickly, the investigation turned to the terrorist track. Monday night, the Moroccan parquet floor indicated to have entrusted the investigation into the anti-terrorism police of the Kingdom. The Central Judicial Investigation Bureau (BCIJ) “was in charge of the investigation in this case under the supervision of the King’s prosecutor near the Court of Appeal of Rabat due to suspicion on a Mobile Terrorist of the Crime”, specified a Moroccan judicial source at the France-Presse agency. According to the Moroccan police, the suspect made a psychiatric stay “from September 25 to October 25, 2021”.

The announcement of the opening of an investigation for “assassination in relation to a terrorist company” by the national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office (UNAT) in Paris, Wednesday evening 19 January, confirms the suspicions on the jihadist character of the attack. “Investigations have been entrusted to the Internal Security Branch (DGSI), the Central Central Directorate of the Central Police Directorate (SDAT) and the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police,” said the UNAT in his communiqué.
