The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharov commented on the statement of the head of diplomacy of the European Union Josepa Borrel about the help of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Kazakhstan in its Telegram Channel.
As Zakharov recalled, Borrel stated that the assistance of the CSTO “causes memories of situations that should be avoided,” and also expressed concern because of the situation in the country. “As they say, twice a day and broken watches show the right time. Borrel rights: you should avoid rampage extremism and you need to remember this,” she added.
January 5, President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev appealed to the CSTO for help because of the riots started in the country. Russia sent units of airborne troops. The next day, the advanced group of CSTO peacekeeping forces began to work in Kazakhstan.
On January 2, protests began in Kazakhstani cities due to the increase in gas prices for cars from 60 to 120 tenge. Later, they turned into disorders with the requirements of the first president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev from politics, holding new elections and the dissolution of parliament. The most significant collisions occurred in the former capital of Alma-Ata.
