COVID-19: Guadeloupe renews state of emergency sanitary on back of violence

In Guadeloupe, the respite will have been short-lived. The government has decreed, Wednesday, January 5, the state of health emergency in Guadeloupe, as well as in Guyana, in Mayotte, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. “Under the effect of the Omicron Variant, the circulation of COVID-19 is experiencing a significant increase in several ultramarine territories,” the decree presented in the Council of Ministers.

Last week, after the speech of 27 December of Prime Minister, Jean Castex, the state of emergency sanitary had already been triggered at the meeting and prolonged in Martinique, department submitted to this scheme since mid-July. The text adopted on Wednesday also states that the Government will present the Senate amendment to the draft law strengthening the management tools for the health crisis to “predict the prolongation of the state of health sanitary as at March 31, 2022”.

The prefect of Guadeloupe, Alexandre Rochattte, has not lost time. Amending the publication of the Decree in the Official Journal, the representative of the State announced the color, Wednesday afternoon, at a press conference given in tandem with Valérie Denux, the Director General of the Regional Health Agency (ARS ) of Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. “This state of emergency sanitary allows me to take a number of measures that, unfortunately, we know well,” observed Alexandre Rochattte, before announcing the details of the restrictions that will come into force on Friday, January 7. Among other things, the end of “some derogations” enjoyed by Guadeloupe as to the application of the sanitary pass, dancing evenings or teleworking. The beaches will be forbidden to access every evening from 18 hours, while the carnival parades are likely canceled. “We will set up a curfew,” added the prefect. From Friday night, the Guadeloupéens will have to stay at home at night, between 10 pm and 5 am. The beginning of the curfew could be advanced at 8 pm on Sunday according to the evolution of the sanitary situation.
