Estonian President Alar Caris made the existence of Russian-speaking schools in the country during an interview with ETV + TV channel.
According to Caris, how many Russian-speaking schools will eventually remain in Estonia – the question is hypothetical, and it is difficult to answer it. “I suppose there could be some schools, where youth would learn Russian and studied in Russian. After all, we can learn in English and French. Russian language is not an exception in this sense,” he noted. At the same time, the president declared that it was necessary to gradually move to education on Estonian.
December 7, the Ministry of Education of Estonia presented a plan to fully deruit schools in the country. According to him, the country will not have Russian-speaking schools by 2035.
Before that, Alar Caris stated that the refusal of teaching in Russian in Estonia schools is impossible. The head of state also criticized the idea to make only Estonian-speaking higher education. According to him, such actions will be “some discrimination slightly”. At the same time, Caris stressed that the language still remains a significant split factor in society.
