The University of Edinburgh submitted preliminary results of the study that show that the Omicron-version of the Coronavirus SARS-COV-2 is less dangerous than previous strains. The findings of specialists who are not yet published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal are based on data demonstrating a decrease in the risk of hospitalization in an infected new form of the virus. About it reports The Washington Post.
Researchers analyzed data on vaccination, age, gender, concomitant states of health and coronavirus infection in the population of Scotland. It turned out that patients infected with Omicron-option SARS-COV-2, 60 percent less often fall into the hospital than those that are infected with the dominant delta option. At the same time, the more “soft” oomikron option replaces the strain of the delta, since it is easier to transmit from a person to man.
Recently vaccinated people have protection against a new coronavirus version, although to a lesser extent than from the previous strain. The third dose of vaccine provides a decrease in the risk of symptomatic COVID-19 by 57 percent. Booster vaccines provide 80 percent protection.
The probability of re-infection by an oomikron option is ten times higher than the infection of delta option. Despite the possible reduction in the risk of hospitalization, the new strain can lead to the fact that more people fall into hospitals, and the load on doctors will grow significantly.
In parallel with this, a group of scientists from the Imperial College of London confirmed that 15-20 percent infected by Omicron were less likely to get into the office of emergency care with severe symptoms and 40 percent were less likely hospitalized compared to those who were infected with Delta.
