The fall has been unpublished for 75 years. The life expectancy of the Americans at birth went from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77 years in 2020, almost two years less, according to the final figures of the prevention and control centers (CDC) .
The life expectancy gap between men and women has also dug, from 5.1 years in 2019 to 5.7 years in 2020: 74.2 years of life expectancy for men. , against 79.9 for women in 2020.
The COVID-19 was the third cause of death in the United States in 2020, with 350,000 dead – behind cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
These data are published after public estimates, Tuesday, December 21, by the US census office, showing that the US population has increased in 2021 at the slowest rhythm ever registered.
The pandemic of Covid-19 has accelerated a background trend, with fewer births and more deaths. Between July 2020 and July 2021, the growth of the US population was only 0.1%, according to the Census Office. The American population is now established at nearly 331.9 million.
“The growth of the population has been slowing for years due to lower birth rates and the decline in international migration, while the mortality rate increases due to the aging of the country’s population,” said Kristie Wilder, demographer at the census office, cited in the statement. “With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, this combination has resulted in a historically slow rate of growth,” she added.
Stronger population growth for Texas
Another consequence of the pandemic, some states, particularly in the west, have won inhabitants, while those in the northeast, urbanized, have lost. The Texas has recorded, in absolute terms, the strongest growth (+ 1.1%), mainly thanks to the 170,000 people from another state and have chosen to settle there.
Idaho attracted nearly 49,000 new inhabitants from another state and thus recorded the strongest growth reported to its population (+ 2.9%).
On the other hand, the New York State has seen its population fall under the 20 million mark (-1.6%). More than 352,000 people have chosen to leave this state for another in the country. The Federal Capital, Washington, recorded the largest decline in percentage population (- 2.9%).
These figures are an estimate, made from data from the 2020 decennial census but also of birth, death and immigration figures. The Census of 2020 had been upset by the pandemic on the one hand and the controversial methodological changes requested by the former President Donald Trump on the other.
These data are essential for determining the electoral division of the 50 US states and the allowance of tens of billions of dollars of federal funds for schools or hospitals. It also makes it possible to determine the weight of each State in the House of Representatives.
