New RCS stations for Cospass-Sarsat system will help save thousands of lives

Creating a network of ground-based signals from the search and rescue equipment Cospass-Sarsat on board the medium-bit navigation satellites GLONASS, GPS, Galileo and Beidou began in the holding “Russian Space Systems” (RCS, is included in the state corporation “Roskosmos”).

Together with now the low-bit and geostationary satellites, the use of medium-bit satellites will increase the transfer rate of Russia’s search and rescue services and other countries on the situation when activating emergency radio beacons on aircraft, maritime courts, personal use. This will help speed up search and rescue operations and save thousands of human lives.

Chief designer in the direction of search and rescue systems of the RCC Andrei Fedoseyev: “The development of the” Lasting “Cospass Sarsat is historically – the priority direction of the RCC, in decades we have accumulated invaluable knowledge. New stations use a unique experience of specialists in receiving and processing emergency radio beacons and innovative ideas that have been developed at the stage of demonstration tests created by the Cospas-Sarsat average component, which opened new opportunities to ensure search and rescue operations. “

Each ground station is equipped with an innovative active antenna phased lattice (AFAR) of the development of the RCC, which can receive a signal with 12 spacecraft at the same time. Two such stations will ensure the coating of the new medium-bit component of the satellite system (HSSPS) Cospass-Sarsat all the territory of Russia.

In the stations are implemented advanced functions of measuring the frequency of emergency radio signals and selection of satellites to guide the antennas in order to maximize the area of coverage and minimize the error of determining the location of the radio. New stations can handle signals as existing emergency radio resources (first generation) and buoys of the second generation, the development of which is actively conducted by Cospass-Sarsat engineers.

Demonstration tests showed the efficiency of engineering solutions of the RCC: the accuracy of the independent location of the emergency radar of the first generation is less than 2 km under the requirements of 5 km.

The International Satellite Satellite System Cospass Sarsat Successfully ensures the salvation of human lives for almost 40 years. Since the launch of the first satellite with the search and rescue equipment of the RCC, more than fifty thousand people were rescued on the planet.

Earlier, the RCC announced the beginning of the integration of the Mid-Rubital Satellite GLONASS group to the Cospass-Sarsat International Space Space system, as well as the onboard radio complex of the search and rescue of a new generation, which will not only determine the exact location of aircraft, ships and people who endure disaster, but And on the feedback channel, confirm that the signal is accepted and assistance in the way.
