According to the concept of engineers of two companies, the new method is the vertical location of the transistors in the chips instead of the usual horizontal. Scientists believe that the technology of Vertical Transport Field Effect Transistors (VTFET) will be replaced by the existing Finfet. In this case, the electricity is supplied vertically, which significantly optimizes its distribution by chip components.
According to experts, a new method allows to significantly reduce electricity consumption. According to one of the ambitious plans, in the future there is a two-time improvement in productivity or reducing energy consumption by 85 percent compared to FinFet technology. Also, thanks to VTFET, the restrictions imposed by the Moore law can be observed, according to which the number of transistors doubles every 24 months.
IBM and Samsung specialists noted that the new technology will allow not only to increase the autonomy of smartphone batteries, but also create a less energy-intensive way of mining cryptocurrency and data encryption.
