The countries of the European Union (EU) must be more decisive in their actions in relation to the official Minsk and in support of the Belarusian people. With such a call from the Tribunes of the European Parliament, a former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was made.
According to her, it is necessary to continue to put pressure on the current Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to achieve any results in the process of democratization of the Belarusian society. The opposition recalled that in Belarus already 882 people are recognized as political prisoners, and the regime itself uses refugees to blackmail Western countries.
“Do we have forgotten the tragic lessons of European history? The fact that attempts to indulge in Tiran do not calm down, but only spur it,” said Tikhanovskaya. In this regard, politician also offered the EU to get rid of the “dictatorship virus” Lukashenko. In her opinion, the most effective measures will be diplomatic insulation of Minsk, new sanctions and expansion of the Civil Society Assistance Program.
Previously, Tihananovskaya called on the head of the Ministry of Education of the European Union to refrain from any contacts with Minsk until the Belarusian authorities expect all political prisoners. She also added that he did not see sense in cooperation with the Lukashenko regime, since he could not be trusted.
