Ethiopia: war is approaching capital Addis Ababa

While Tigray rebels were within 200 kilometers loyalist self-defense forces were massing. France asked its citizens to leave as soon as the country.

Debre Sina is a small town usually quiet at the foot of an imposing mountain range. Its capture by the rebels Tigrean Defense Forces (TDF), confirmed Tuesday 23 November, led for the first time the gusts of wind of the war to Addis Ababa. At about 180 kilometers further south, the Ethiopian capital now feel the tension rising. Debre Sina had been identified for months by many observers as the ultimate step to take before Addis Ababa endanger since the last major line of defense of the federal forces is installed close in height.

Since Debre Sina, TDF continued their progression to “Tunnel of Italians”, which leads to neck Termaber. Their first elements deployed it for several days. Up there, to the ridge lines, about 3000 meters above sea level, members of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (FDNE) control access to the other side, towards the plateau that leads to the suburbs capital city. On Tuesday night, a diplomatic source, the “fighting on the mountain” continued, the TDF is reached “almost to the neck.”

Reinforcements from both sides

Tigray rebels bring in reinforcements to their troops (perhaps tens of thousands) from the north, from the Dessie region. For about a week, they also conducted a Termaber cervical bypass from the west. The move leaves no doubt about their intentions to blow the lock. Normally, Debre Sina is only three hours drive from the capital.

In the past weeks, the TDF have they lured the Ethiopian central government when they announced a scale attack on another front, that of the Afar region (in the east)? They claimed to have set the objective of making Mille, a town that controls the supply route to the capital from the port of Djibouti. There, the rebels appear to have broken teeth on the loyalist defenses in the region. The government camp inferred that his opponents were struggling. They were actually trying to break through to Debre Sina.

Meanwhile, allies of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) nibble ground in their region, Oromia, which surrounds Addis Ababa. They are not yet at the gates of the capital, but some groups of their fighters are no longer far away, even if their main field of action is in a more distant crown from west to north.
