The decision was taken unanimously. The University of Clermont-Auvergne Discipline Commission has relaxed on November 19, the seventeen students of Sciences Po Grenoble pursued for their participation, between January 8 and February 22, 2021, to the dissemination of the charges of Islamophobia targeting two teachers of the establishment. The names of these teachers were then closed on the walls of the Institute, on March 4, pushed to this sentence: “Fascists in our amphis. Islamophobia kills.” A police investigation is still in progress to determine the identity of poster installers.
Only one student, over the seventeen, was the subject of a suspended temporary exclusion sanction, as part of another case, for “defamation” against a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) that it had accused of sexual harassment.
This relaxes, of which Le Monde had a copy, goes against the recommendations of the Minister of Higher Education, Frédérique Vidal, who had called to sanction these students, members of the Union Union (US) On the grounds that they had “behaved inadmissiblely” by defaming their teachers on social networks, bringing “reached” in honor of the latter and, consequently, to the reputation of the IEP.
In his Report Delivered to the minister on May 7, the general inspection of education, sport and research ( IGESR) had severely judged these same students, accused of creating “a climate of fear”. The inspection called for the director of the institution to initiate a disciplinary procedure without delay, and intimated the order to shift the case in another institution to avoid any risk of disorder to public order and guarantee the impartiality of the members of the disciplinary section.
The direction of the IEP “takes note”
As a reminder, on January 9, the elected representatives of the US had asked, in an email to the Director of the IEP, to “rule” on the case of one of the two teachers and to “take action To combat Islamophobia in the establishment “. On social networks, the union went further, claiming “that concrete acts be made”, including the removal of the course on Islam provided by the Second Professor – which was, moreover, came to support his colleague. Finally, on February 22, by a “call for testimonials” published on Facebook, the US invited students to denounce the Islamophobic remarks that could have been kept in this course.
