Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kisida commented on the problem of the lack of a peace treaty between Tokyo and Moscow. This is reported on the website of his office.
Kisida noted that the basic position of Japan is to solve the issue of “northern territories” and the conclusion of a peace treaty. According to him, this problem is a “struggle with time.” The prime minister stressed that he would like to work hard on the resolution of this task, so as not to shift it on the shoulders of the following generations.
In addition, Kisida recalled that immediately after the entry into office, he phon with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said that the heads of state agreed to seriously deal with this problem on the basis of agreements already reached, including prisoners in Singapore in 2018.
Earlier it was reported that the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Japan Sergey Lavrov and Yoshimas Hayashi held telephone negotiations, during which they discussed a peace treaty regarding the belonging of the Kuril Islands. The parties “confirmed the intention to continue the dialogue” to conclude the world. “The ministers exchanged views, stressing the intention to develop Japanese-Russian relations in many areas, including in the field of politics, culture, and so on, as well as in the direction of the conclusion of a peace treaty,” said the press service of the Japanese Minister.
Due to the dispute about the belonging of the southern part of Kuril Moscow and Tokyo cannot sign a peace treaty on the results of the Second World War. Japan believes the islands of ITUURUP, Kunashir, Shikotan and a group of Habmioma Islands with its “northern territories”. In turn, Russia does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute itself.
