It’s a historic victory – though not yet official. For the first time, the Honduras will be led by a woman, Xiomara Castro, the candidate of the party freedom and refoundation (free, left), who obtained the majority in the presidential election of November 28th.
His right rival, Nasry Asfura, the national party candidate (PN) for twelve years, recognized his defeat, Tuesday, November 30, in the evening, greeting the “triumph” of M me Castro, even though the National Electoral Council had still not given any definitive results. Thursday morning, just 60% of newsletters had been stripped. This recognition, activated by a visit by Mr. Asfura to the candidate’s home, was the event that Honduans expected for forty-eight hours, suspended from the vote count which does not end.
The campaign had been marked by violence and political killings – nearly thirty in ten campaign – and the population feared, as happened in 2017, during the re-election of President Juan Orlando Hernandez ( “Joh”), a reversal of last minute results. This means if the recognition of his defeat by Mr. Asfura was expected. In the wake, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, greeted on Tuesday a “free and fair” election.
Xiomara Castro harvested nearly 52% of the votes, compared to 35% for Mr. Asfura, and 9% for the third in the running, Yani Rosenthal, the Liberal Party (PL), depending on the partial results. A triumph all the more unpublished that it breaks with a hundred years of bipartism between the PN and the PL, and that the participation has been the highest in the recent history of the country (69%).
“A light for the whole country”
“Twelve years of resistance of this people have not been in vain!”, had been commended, Sunday night, Xiomara Castro, while thousands of people, without waiting for the results, went out in the streets to the cry of ” Joh, you’re going! “. The Head of State leaves power with a popularity rate in free fall, after two mandates marked by the accusations of links with drug trafficking – American justice has been until the Honduras of “Narco-State” .
“The triumph of M me Castro is that of an alliance that wanted to oust power the criminal structure that ruled for so long, rejoices Joaquin Mejia, lawyer and researcher of the Team reflection, research and communication, an NGO. It is a hope, a light for the whole country after black years. “
