NATO did not see need for new EU security structures

At the moment, the European Union (EU) does not need new security-related structures. This opinion was expressed by the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg, his words reported Reuters.

The Secretary General did not see the need to revise the defense strategy of the association. So he responded to the words of President of France Emmanuel Macgron that the EU should have the opportunity to independently defend against external threats, despite the effectiveness of transatlantic cooperation with NATO.

“In this area, we need to develop more opportunities, and not to replace new structures that will compete for these opportunities,” concluded Stoltenberg.

Earlier, Macron stated that during the chairmanship of the European Union, Paris intends to initiate Shengen reform in two priorities. The first priority will be the introduction of the political management of the Schengen zone, similar to that exists in the euro area. The second priority is the French leader called the development of a mechanism for emergency support for European borders in case of crisis.
