EU to create a European asylum agency

The Council of the European Union (EU) approved a decision on the establishment of a European agency to improve asylum. The message about this is published on the website of the Council.

According to the application, the Agency will be created on the basis of the European Office for Asylum to expand the operational and technical assistance to the Member States of the Union and contribute to the rapprochement of an assessment of international protection applications. “This [Agency] will also contribute to our cooperation with third countries, showing the strength of our joint actions in a very concrete way,” the report said.

A new agency is created as part of the discussion of the new EU Covenant for Migration. The document proposes to strengthen control at the external borders of the European Union and speed up the process of consideration of asylum requests. Also, the Covenant describes the possibility for Member States not only to take migrants who arrived in one of the countries of the Union, but also to take on financial obligations to express the right to remain in the EU.

In September, the head of the European Commission of Ursula von der Lyien stated that the European Union would work on blocking all migration threats with the help of a Schengen Agreement. The politician reminded the migration crisis that broke out in the EU countries neighboring Belarus and noted that the associations should be prepared for the fact that such incidents are repeated.
