The official representative of the EU Foreign Policy Center has explained why Brussels refused to recognize the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as president of the country. In an interview with Lente.ru, he noted that this is due to the fact that the presidential elections in Belarus were not honest and did not meet international standards.
“We do not recognize Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as a president, we spend the discussion with her, but we do not consider the president, because there were no free and fair elections in the country,” said Methan.
Earlier, the representative of the European Commission also called the conditions for recognizing Alexander Lukashenko legitimate president of Belarus. According to him, it will be possible if the Belarusian people vote for him during free and fair elections.
The wave of protests has passed throughout Belarus in 2020. After the elections of the president, who took place on August 9, the CEC stated that Lukashenko received 80 percent of the votes. His rival in elections, the wife of the opposition blogger Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, won only 10 percent of the votes. The citizens of the country went out with such results, the protests continued for several months. A number of opposition politicians and activists were arrested or fled abroad, and Tikhanovskaya itself was among the latter.
