EU has declared a condition for recognition of Lukashenko legitimate president

The official representative of the European Union’s foreign policy service was called the conditions for recognizing Alexander Lukashenko legitimate president of Belarus. In an interview with Lente.ru, he stated that it would be possible if the Belarusian people vote for him during free and fair elections.

According to him, another important condition – compliance with international standards and the availability of international observers. “The past elections were not as followed, they were obviously falsified,” said Metan.

The representative of the European Commission stressed that Brussels recognizes any President of Belarus elected during the fair elections. “We just want people to get this opportunity,” he said.

In mid-September 2020, the head of the EU diplomacy Jozep Borrel stated that Brussels refuses to recognize Lukashenko legitimate president of Belarus. He explained this step by the fact that the presidential elections are considered falsified. Since October 2020, the European Union has received five packages of sanctions against Belarus. Under the last limitations introduced on December 2, 2021, more than 25 individuals and legal entities were accused of involvement in the situation with migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border.

The choice of President of Belarus took place on August 9, 2020. According to their results, the CEC stated that Lukashenko received 80 percent of the votes. His rival in elections, the wife of the opposition blogger Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, won only 10 percent of the votes. The citizens of the country went out with such results, the protests continued for several months. A number of opposition politicians and activists were arrested or fled abroad, and Tikhanovskaya itself was among the latter.
