Specialists from the company “Motorika”, the medical center of the DVFU and Skolteha held the first operation of the exercise of electrodes in Russia, which ensures the transfer of sensations from prostheses. This is reported in a press release, which has “Lenta.ru”.
Electrodes embedded in peripheral nerves allow you to combine the artificial limb with the nervous system and transmit signals from the prosthesis to nerves. Patients were two men with amputations at the forearm level. One of them lost both hands in a fire and now uses biionic prostheses, but suffers from phantom pains that are felt like burning. According to him, at least you want to dip them in cold water. The second patient lost one arm 26 years ago.
After the impact of the electrodes to stimulate the peripheral nerve, primary sensitivity data was obtained. However, participants will have to perform a series of tasks for selecting stimulation parameters to cause sensations when touched to cold or hot, as well as compression or pressure on the subject. The prostheses developed by the “Motoric” are equipped with ultra-compound pressure sensors.
According to Ilya Czech, General Director “Motorika”, in the future it is planned to develop Russian invasive electrodes and stimulants for use in prosthetics and other areas of medicine. The study itself is aimed at monitoring chronic phantom pain, which patients with amputations suffer, which should significantly improve the quality of their life.
