Four days after the sinking of a boat that caused the death of twenty-seven migrants who were trying to join England by crossing the Channel, a European meeting was held in Calais (Pas-de-Calais) , Sunday, November 28th.

The Minister of the French Interior, Gérald Darmanin, his German, Belgian, Dutch counterparts as well as the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and the Directors of the European Criminal Police Agencies (Europol) and Borders (Frontex) announced a Series of measures and intentions supposed to stem the phenomenon of the crossings of the North Channel and Sea. These have exploded since 2018 and have allowed, in 2021, to more than 26,000 people to join the United Kingdom on Fortune Pneumatic Craft.

For the most part, it is the principle of reinforced police and judicial cooperation that has been active, in order to fight smugglers. “Often, boat purchases are done in Germany, the money [East] in Belgium, smugglers are housed in the Netherlands,” justified Gérald Darmanin, at a press point Sunday. Belgium has also not officially responded to the French Minister of the Interior when he said, at the beginning of October, that “half” of those who tried the crossing from Calais or Dunkerque (North) came from Belgium.

The French services also feel that many of those who are trying to crossing trucks often registered in Eastern countries are embarked in Belgium. Iraqi Kurdish networks would also be present on the Belgian territory. Germany, it, is shown because of large boats used for the best organized passages are manufactured in China but would be stored in its territory, before being transported to the Pas-de-Calais beaches. Networks would also be established, as in the Netherlands.

The participants at the Sunday meeting also said they want to improve returns in the countries of origin of migrants present on the coast. “There are many Iraqis in the north and we can not make forced returns, explains the entourage of Mr. Darmanin. A work with the European Commission advances.” And to quote the success of the success of the EU diplomacy in the Belarusian crisis, which made it possible to obtain the suspension of direct air links between Baghdad and Minsk.
