The use of a large amount of coffee is useful in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease – the incurable and deadly form of dementia. Scientists of the University of Edith Kowan came to this conclusion, who conducted a long-term study with several hundreds of residents of Australia. Experts presented their conclusions in the article published in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience magazine.
The effect of coffee was revealed to the prevention of the decline of cognitive abilities in 227 elderly patients who had no signs of dementia. The health of participants followed 126 months. The subgroup of volunteers analyzed the relationship between drinking drinks and accumulation in brain tissues beta-amyloid or brain size. Beta-amyloids are considered the main factor provoking the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Patients who have not suffered from memory violations and very often used coffee at the beginning of the study, had a lower risk of developing light cognitive disorders that are often preceded by Alzheimer’s disease. Coffee also prevented the accumulation of beta-amyloid, but did not affect the degree of atrophy of gray and white substance or reduce the volume of hippocampus – the brain area responsible for the formation of long-term memory.
As noted in a press release on MedicalXpress, although further research is needed, the data is encouraging because they benefit from coffee in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
For example, two cups of coffee will reduce the likelihood of reducing cognitive functions for eight percent for 18 months. During the same period, beta-amyloid accumulation will decrease by five percent. However, the study did not show whether there is a difference between drinking coffee or without drinking drinks, and whether the method of preparation is affected by the result, including the presence of milk with sugar.
