Deputy Head of NASA Thomas Zurbuchen informed RIA Novosti that risks for the Earth to face asteroids, known scientists, was not observed over the next 100 years.
The representative of the department spoke about it before the upcoming launch of the DART space probe to the asteroid Domorsph. It will have to crash into an asteroid for testing the technology of protecting the Earth from a possible collision with a celestial body in the future.
“Be calm, this asteroid is not now and will not be a threat. None of the objects known to us today is a threat in the coming 100 years or so,” said Zurbuchen. He noted that the scientist is currently known about 40 percent of objects of more than 140 square meters, and the remaining 60 percent only have to be found.
Earlier it was reported that the Spaceship Dart will be launched on board the Spacex Falcon 9 at 22:20 on the Pacific Time November 23 from the base of Vdenberg cosmic forces in California. If the launch takes place at this time, then the collision with the asteroid will occur in the period from September 26 to October 1 of the next year.
