Russia: tests of a new icebreaker began

Atomic icebreaker “Siberia” of the project 22220 went to the running tests. Checking the mechanisms and equipment of the icebreaker will take three weeks. This was reported on Tuesday by the United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK).

On trials, the work of the main system of the vessel will be checked. In particular, experts will test the steam turbine installation, the vessel’s electric traffic and deck mechanisms. In OK, noted that an important stage of testing will be the verification of the helicopter complex, navigation and communication systems.

The report stressed that project ships 22220 are the largest icebreaking courts in the world. They are designed for year-round navigation in the western area of ​​the Arctic.

Earlier, US Internal Security Minister Alejandro Mayorshorkas noted the lack of icebreakers in the country. In the US, there are two obsolete ship. The head of department stressed that the administration of US President Joe Bayiden works on a budget request for an increase in the icebreaking fleet.

In October, the Deputy Headquarters of the Logistics of the Armed Forces of Russia Andrei Efimov spoke about the development of the auxiliary fleet. According to him, until 2033, five icebreakers will be built in the country.

Siberia’s atomic icebreaker was laid in May 2015, and in September 2017, the ship was launched. The ship may break over ocean ice and work in the river bed.
