Moldova President Maya Sanda told that the authorities of the republic were surprised when a few days before the end of September found out that the contract with Gazprom was not extended. She told about it on the air of the Jurnaltv TV channel, RIA Novosti reports.
According to Sanda, the authorities would not have risen to conclude a contract if not an increase in gas prices on the world market.
“These negotiations would be completely different if the prices of gas in the world were not so high, there would be no pressure on the government, there would be no rush with the signing of a contract with Gazprom,” she said.
President added that for the Moldova authorities, the lack of gas volumes in October also became a surprise. “We had to buy gas in other places at high prices, because we did not have alternative sources. If we had to suggest such a problem, we would prepare, in the future you need to take care of fuel reserves,” she concluded.
Moldova faced the energy crisis due to the contract ended in October with Gazprom. The republic wanted to conclude a new agreement on preferential terms, but the supplier demanded first to pay debt. On October 29, the country still managed to negotiate with Gazprom on the conclusion of the contract for five years, subject to the audit of debts in 2022. In Gazprom, the terms of the agreement were called mutually beneficial.
