General Director of the British Oil and Gas Company BP Bernard Luni said that oil and gas will be part of the global energy system for many years. The head of the enterprise called on focus on actions to reduce harmful emissions, and not on ideological positions, and prevent the rise in price of fuel for consumers, reports CNBC.
“may not be popular to say that oil and gas will remain in the power system for decades ahead, but this is a reality,” Bernard was predicted in an interview with the Forum of the Energy Industry of Adipec in Abu Dhabi. He stressed that, according to the report of the International Energy Agency “To achieve zero emissions” (“Net Zero”), by 2050, global oil dependence will not disappear completely, its delivery will still be about 20 million barrels per day.
According to Luni, in the future, hydrocarbons will continue to play a certain role, despite the active efforts to transition to renewable energy sources, and the best thing to be done in such a situation is to balance the production and processing of fossil fuels to reduce carbon emissions.
Luni also noted that it is impossible to allow a sharp reduction in oil and gas supplies to prevent prices and not configure citizens against the energy transition. He stressed that when expanding the offer of alternative sources in the energy market, it is necessary to take into account the demand and interests of consumers.
BP actively develops work with renewable energy sources. The energy giant has a pipeline for “green” energy with a capacity of more than 23 gigavats, projects in the field of wind power and hydrogen fuel are implemented. Previously, BP became one of more than 150 companies that joined the Call For Action initiative. The company advocated the tightening of environmental requirements for the shipping industry around the world to speed up its decarbonization by 2050.
