Latvia is in one step from the involvement of NATO to the resolution of the migration crisis on the border with Belorussia. This was announced by the Minister of Defense of the Baltic Republic Artis Pabrix, writes Delfi.
He declared about the readiness of Riga to take advantage of the fourth article of the North Atlantic Treaty and request consultations with other NATO member states in the event that the territorial integrity and security of the republic will be threatened.
Pabriks also noted that Latvia, Lithuania and Poland will submit an appropriate application together if one of the countries want to request support from the North Atlantic Alliance. The minister added that so far the republic’s authorities believe that they are able to cope with the situation on their own.
At the same time, the head of the Latvian military department noted that Riga, Vilnius and Warsaw would follow the further actions of Minsk and Moscow, and stressed that the Belarusian de facto has already lost its independence.
The migration crisis on the border of Belarus with Poland and Lithuania aggravated in November. Crowds of migrants accumulated from cordons republics, and some of them attempted a breakthrough to the territory of the European Union (EU). Western countries have guessed the guilt for the current situation and threatened Minsk with new sanctions.
