The new Constitution should serve for the benefit of the development of sovereign Belarus and to meet the interests of all citizens, therefore, in the process of developing a document, a large-scale sociological study should be carried out. The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, spoke with such a proposal at a meeting with the Working Group on the Refinement of the Project of the Basic Law, transfers BelTA.
According to him, the authorities are important to know the opinion of citizens, not only on the subject of constitutional reform, but also on other relevant issues.
“I think it is also necessary to carry out a large-scale sociological study on this topic, covering various regions and segments of the population. As we did on the eve of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly,” Lukashenko emphasized. The Belarusian leader added that the draft constitution should be finalized as soon as possible by eliminating all the contradictions on the proposals put forward by the Constitutional Commission.
Against the backdrop of protests that have engulfed Belarus after the presidential election on August 9, 2020, Lukashenko declared the need to make changes to the Constitution and the redistribution of powerful powers. In March 2021, he convened a special constitutional commission from 36 people and stated that it would consider civil initiatives to a new project.
At the same time, the Belarusian opposition has developed its own draft constitution. He involves the transfer of the state with the presidential form of government to parliamentary, as well as a significant expansion of civil rights.
