The measurement to stem the unparalleled number of new cases of contamination in Austria marks an unprecedented step. Alexander Schallenberg, the Austrian Chancellor, announced, on Sunday, November 14, the entry into force on Monday of confinement for non-vaccinated persons or who have not cocid-19.
“The situation is serious (…). We do not take this measure the light heart but unfortunately it is necessary,” said Schallenberg at a press conference in Vienna.
This decision is the result of the wave of contamination, as spectacular and rapid, which currently affects all Central Europe and which extends to Germany. As many countries where vaccination rates remain low or just in the European Union average.
Wednesday 10 November, Austria recorded 12,309 contaminations, the highest number in the country since the beginning of the epidemic. Corollary: The number of hospitalized patients in intensive care has increased sharply to 417 people. Thursday, the Government Scientific Commission has drawn the alarm in ensuring that intensive care services could, at this rate, be overwhelmed around “24 November” and asked for “immediate additional measures”.
Since November 8, unvaccinated Austrians could not already access restaurants, hairdressers and cultural activities without showing a health care attesting vaccination or healing less than six months. The “containment of non-vaccinated” will further limit their travels, since they can no longer be able to visit non-essential businesses or the traditional Christmas markets. They will always be able to go to work, for testing, or the supermarket, and also maintain the right to go out “to become physically and mentally”, which has always been possible during previous confines in Austria, where there is Never had a kilometer or exit certificate rule.
