Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks made NATO’s participation in resolving the migration crisis at the Border of Belarus and the EU countries. He stated this on the air radio station, reports TASS.
“I think that if [President of Belarus Alexander] Lukashenko will go [to exacerbation of the situation], then the European Union and – I can not exclude – even NATO will be involved. Because we must protect your border, and we do not open the border. We will “,” said the head of the Ministry of Defense.
Earlier, Pabriks said that the Baltic countries and Poland will not at least take migrants who are trying to break through from the territory of Belarus.
The commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia Leonids Kalnins assured that the army of the republic is ready to immediately respond to the possible mass influx of refugees. Daily 100-150 soldiers and militias provide support to border guards, if necessary, additional forces from different regions of the country will be mobilized.
In early November, migrants from the Middle East were gathered in Belarus at the borders with Poland and Lithuania, who are trying to break into the European Union. Warsaw and Vilnius argue that all this was organized by the Belarusian authorities.
Lukashenko said that Polish security forces beat migrants, break them the ribs, and also shoot on top of their heads towards Belarus. He said he asked Moscow to help in patrolling the border, which is the border of the Union State.
