Two ceremonies should succeed, at the Arc de Triomphe then in Mont-Valerian, the main place of resistance during the Second World War, where the resistant body, dead on October 12, will be buried in the crypt From the fighter france memorial. In June 1960, inaugurating this memorial in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine), Charles de Gaulle had issued the wish that the Celleau n ° 9 of the crypt be reserved for the last of the members of the order of the liberation. Only 1,038 people, including six women, received this title. Hubert Germain was the last survivor of them.
The coffin of Hubert Germain left the invalids, worn on a tank amx-10 called “Bir Hakeim” and reassembled the Champs-Elysées, accompanied by the escort of the Republican guard, to participate in the traditional ceremony of the armistice, attended by the American vice-president Kamala Harris. Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech in which he paid tribute to Hubert Germain, launching:
“Would we be there without Hubert Germain? At 20 years old he was leaving everything. His landmark lands, his family, his friends, to win London. And soon, with honor and loyalty, was covered with glory in Bir Hakeim . “
At the end of the ceremony, the convoy will go to Mont-Valerian, for a final tribute at 2:30 pm, in the presence of the head of state. The ceremony will take place “in the greatest sobriety and silence” with the exception of a Marseillaise and the song of supporters, according to the Elysée. Emmanuel Macron will collect alone in the crypt in front of the coffin, on which he will deposit a Cross of Lorraine carved in the wood of the carpentry of the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris, as Hubert Germain had wanted.
