Increasing chances of survival of patients on IVL factors

Russian scientists from the Bashkir State Medical University (BGMU) have allocated three factors that allow you to predict the chances of patients with coronavirus infection connected to the artificial ventilation devices (IVL), for death, or recovery. This is written “Izvestia”.

The study was attended by 200 patients with a difficult course of COVID-19, which were in the intensive care unit of urban clinical hospitals Ufa. They were divided into two groups: one required a connection to the IVL, others could breathe alone.

As a result, such factors as an assessment on a scale for determining the degree of polyorgan definition (Sofa), the ratio of the number of neutrophils to lymphocytes (indicates the focus of inflammation) and the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines (speaks of a cytokine storm). If all these indicators are high, the forecast is less favorable.

The negative indicators were the presence of oncological diseases, as well as complications from cardiovascular and endocrine systems. Also, the experience of accompanying diseases and their compensation is also played.

“The dead patients were more often men and initially had statistically significantly higher scores on the Sofa scale, the value of the ratio of the number of neutrophils to lymphocytes and the content of interleukin-6 inflammation markers (IL-6) in the blood,” said the deputy chief physician for surgical help clinic BGMU Ildar Galimov.

It is specified that the scores on the SOFA scale are based on the evaluation of the dysfunction of the basic systems of the body: respiratory, coagulation, liver, cardiovascular, neurological, renal. The higher the indicator, the worse the patient’s condition.

Previously, the doctor and TV presenter Alexander Butchers called the reasons why people grafted from COVID-19 fall into intensive care. According to him, if a more young man falls into the resuscitation department, most likely the cause was not viral pneumonia. He added that with inflammation of the lungs caused by the new coronavirus infection, it is very difficult to remove a person with IVL, and mortality among such patients is approaching 90 percent.
