The Ministry of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture) appealed to the Office of the Government of Russia with a proposal to abolish the duty to import frozen beef and pork into the country. This is reported by Izvestia with reference to the letter of the department.
Currently, the import of foreign products is paid to collect 15 and 25 percent, respectively. The document proposes to establish a quota of 200 thousand tons for each type of meat. The Ministry of Agriculture noted that resetting duties on this volume of products will allow stabilizing meat prices in the domestic market.
The department reminded that since October of this year, the importers of beef at the entrance to Russia lost opportunities to receive a discount on the duty, since the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) changed the grid of tariff preferences. Specialists warned that without discounts, the products will rise in price for Russia, since such costs will increase the price tag for almost 4 percent to the value of imports from foreign countries. In turn, the zero duty will allow to keep the increase in the cost of beef and containing its products.
Edition also notes that Russia may not have enough of its own resources to ensure pork needs, since in September its production decreased due to outbreaks of the African plague of pigs (ACMS) in a number of regions. The Ministry of Agriculture suggested that in 2022, injured enterprises can reduce supply for 200 thousand tons. However, a duty of 0 percent on pork can contribute to the fact that Russia will receive imported products at prices comparable to domestic.
Previously more than ten the largest Russian manufacturers of sausages and sausages were warned by retailers about the rise in price of products by 7-20 percent from the end of October – the beginning of November. This is due to the increase in the cost of production, and the peak values of the price of meat reached in August-September 2021. The Ministry of Aglichoz said that the government took measures to stabilize meat prices in Russia.
