Back to the grant fair (even respect for barrier gestures), at Drouant. After a 2020 edition that had seen the laureate, Hervé the Tellier, sacred for the anomaly (Gallimard) by videoconference, the goncourt returned to the Parisian restaurant associated with it since 1903. This is where, Wednesday, November 3rd, Philippe Claudel, Secretary General of the Prize, announced the name of the writer crowned in 2021: Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, distinguished for the most secret memory of men (Philippe Rey / Jimsaan), from the first round. Also in the running: Christine Angot for the trip in the east (Flammarion), Sorj Cablandon for Children of Salaud (Grasset) and Louis-Philippe Dalembert for Milwaukee Blues (Sabine Wespieser Publisher).
For several days, the most secret memory of men was presented as a favorite. Its author, born in 1990 in Senegal – he is the first author of sub-Saharan Africa to see “glitch”, and the youngest since 1976 – was not the most famous of the selection; Neither the two houses that coedite it (Philippe Rey French side, Jimsaan Senegalese side), regulars of the race at the price. No more than his text came as the simplest access. But the impressive ambition and stunning narrative energy of the most secret memory of men have carried everything over their passage.
Do not advise to ask the author: “It’s talking about?” “This question embodies the evil in literature,” said his narrator, Diege Latye Faye, young Senegalese writer settled in Paris. It goes on the footsteps of a novel published in 1938, the labyrinth of the inhuman, of a certain T. Elimane, which made the latter a pertussis of the literary pre-war Paris. Before plagiarism charges result in the destruction of the book and the disappearance of Elimane. The latter borrows number of traits at the Malian writer Yambo Ouologuem (1940-2017), to whom the novel is dedicated, and which undergoes similar attacks, as well as a terrible disgrace, after his first novel, the duty of violence ( Threshold, 1968), had received the Renaudot Award.

In the most secret memory of men, along the search of Faye, the stories are driving, a narrator often caches another, we move between the continents (passing from France to Senegal, from Amsterdam to Buenos Aires), Epoque and Literary Genres – Intimate Newspaper, Press Excerpts, Interviews, Stained Fantasy, Roman Learning … Always, Elimane’s figure escapes. And always, Diege Latyr Faye, supported by the mysterious writer Siga D., the one who put the labyrinth of the inhuman in the hands, continues his meditation on the literature, his powers and his impasses: “literature; he does not remained and would never remain only literature; the indecent literature, as a response, as a problem, like faith, like pride, like life. “
