COVID-19: After abandonment of sanitary restrictions, a case outbreak in United Kingdom

Since the summer, the Johnson government estimates that with 78.7% vaccinated in over 12 years, protection measures are no longer needed. Wednesday, 42,776 new contaminations have been recorded, at the highest for three months.

“The United Kingdom – At least England – is the coolest country in Europe” welcomed David Frost, the British minister in Europe alluding to the Pandemic of Covid-19 in A speech devoted to Brexit, Tuesday, October 12th. “About COVID, we have chosen a balance between reopening and hospital pressure, to which we can stand,” added the ex-chief negotiator of divorce with the European Union. These remarks summarize the Johnson government’s bias since the summer: “Living with the virus” repeat its members, the spring vaccine campaign has been a success (78.7% double vaccinated in the over 12 years) , sanitary restrictions are no longer needed.

But this “freedom” has a price: Wednesday, 42,776 new contaminations have been recorded in twenty-four hours, at the highest for three months. And over the last seven days, the daily average of contaminations was almost 32,000. As for deaths, they still oscillate between 100 and 150 per day (136 Wednesday), highly high levels even if they have nothing to do with with those observed during the first wave (spring 2020) and the second (winter 2020). Currently, 7,000 CIVID-19 patients are hospitalized in the United Kingdom and the number of admissions is about 700 per day. Hospitals are far from saturated as early 2021 but doctors complain about additional pressure while the NHS (the national hospital system) must sell a huge waiting list (more than 5 million) of patients pending delayed care or operations because of the pandemic.

In the Midlands and northern England, the most affected since the beginning of the health crisis, more than 400 people had coronavirus, over 100,000 over the last seven days. These levels of infection are hardly surprising: in England, the greater world wears the mask in public transport, shops or populous places (however, it is still compulsory in Scotland). No health care system has been imposed, despite the attempts (timid) of the Johnson government in early September. Contact cases no longer need to isolate if they are doubly vaccinated. Nobody wore the mask at the Conservative Party Annual Conference, early October in Manchester, despite the confined atmosphere and thousands of participants. The mask was still (a little) of rigor at the Annual Labor Congress, a week earlier in Brighton, the “Libertarians” allergic to the social distance being more numerous in the Camp Tory that Labor.
