Referendum on updated Constitution of Belarus will be held at end of February

According to Cochanova, the draft constitution is being refined, in the near future it will be taken to a national discussion. “At the end of February, a referendum will be held on the adoption of the fundamental law of our country,” she said.

Earlier, a member of the Constitutional Commission, Yuri Voskresensky, said that the final draft amendments will be submitted for public discussion no later than November 7. “We practically remained inconsistent with one section – about the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly and its powers, formation,” he told.

President Alexander Lukashenko declared the need to change the Constitution against the background of protests who have engulfed Belarus after the election of the head of state in August 2020. He argued that after the adoption of a new version of the Basic Law leaves his post.
