Researchers from the UK found that the testosterone level in the body affects sexual behavior and the type of relationship in which a person comes. The article of scientists is published in The Journal of Sex Research.
Researchers from the University College of London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine collected samples of saliva from more than 4,000 participants – 1599 men and 2123 women – Lüngitudinal (long-term) study of British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles. Also, participants were asked to fill out questionnaires about their sexual behavior, as well as the presence of sexual disorders.
Using the method of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry, scientists have determined testosterone content from participants. It turned out that men with a higher level of hormone had more sexual partners over the past five years in the same period of time. In addition, they were prone more often to engage in heterosexual vaginal sex. Higher level of testosterone was observed in women who joined same-sex relationships. Also, such women are more often masturbated.
According to scientists, their research data will help to fill the “gap” in the role of androgen in women’s sexuality. “In the absence of the observed connection with the heterosexual behavior, the noted Testosterone connection with masturbation among women can be considered as evidence that social factors restrain the hormonal influence on behavior,” one of the researchers of Wendy McDowell.
