Global shortage of semiconductors hit Renault. Due to problems with deliveries, the French automotive company will reduce the volume of production in 2021 no less than 300 thousand cars, reports Reuters with reference to three sources close to the company.
According to one of the sources, in 2021, Renault will release less than 300-400 thousand cars than planned. Two other sources stated that this figure could be from 350 thousand to 380 thousand. Back in September, Renault was expected to reduce production by 220 thousand cars.
As stated by the organization of the automotive industry and transport PFA, the lack of chips can last until 2022. PFA believes that the deficit arose in the most inappropriate moment for the industry. The demand for chips is growing as the automotive industry is restored from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and also increase the production of electrocars.
Renault expects that by 2030, electric cars will have to 90 percent of sales. At the same time, the EU plans to completely switch to electrocars by 2035 and reduce the level of harmful emissions by 65 percent by 2030. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, emissions must be reduced by 2030 by only 55 percent, as well as to save hybrid cars.
